    Gone are the days when surveillance systems simply recorded footage for review. Today, AI-enabled systems can analyze video feeds in real time, identifying potential threats, and triggering immediate responses. 

    The next generation of surveillance systems will be defined by three key advancements: 

    1. Predictive Analytics: By analyzing patterns from historical data, surveillance systems can forecast potential incidents before they occur, allowing teams to proactively address concerns rather than reacting after the fact. For instance, AI can identify potentially hazardous situations, or even flag unusual employee behaviors in real-time, ensuring a safer environment.

    2. Autonomous Surveillance: Autonomous systems can operate independently, without human intervention. These can adjust settings, reposition cameras, and even analyze live footage to spot security threats without needing constant oversight. With applications in public safety and transportation, this shift will not only improve response times but will also reduce the burden on human resources, allowing them to focus on more critical tasks. 

    3. Enhanced Data Processing: The massive amount of data generated by surveillance systems can overwhelm traditional methods of analysis. AI solves this challenge by enabling faster, more accurate data processing. With AI-driven analytics, vast amounts of video and sensor data can be processed in seconds, providing instant insights that were previously out of reach.

     

    A common concern about AI is its potential to replace human jobs, with many assuming it will take over entirely. However, Ostad points out, "that was never the purpose of AI. The purpose of AI was to provide you with close to real-time information so that you could utilize the information and make the right decision about what to do about it." AI is a tool designed to augment human capabilities by providing critical data, allowing operators to focus on more complex decision-making rather than replacing human involvement.

     

    AI's Impact Across Industries

     

    Public Transit

    "One thing AI could do is track passenger occupancy and provide that data in real-time to the transit agency, saying, 'Hey, bus five on route one is 100% full. Get another bus on the line,'” says Ostad. Through predictive analytics, transit agencies can optimize routes and schedules, reducing delays and enhancing passenger satisfaction, leading to increased ridership and a more efficient service overall.

    Autonomous buses equipped with AI-powered sensors and cameras are gradually being introduced, improving both safety and accessibility.

     

    School Bus Transportation

    For school buses, Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and AI-powered cameras are helping drivers stay vigilant, while route optimization software ensures timely and fuel-efficient operations.

    Facial recognition and RFID technologies are also being integrated to ensure that students board the correct bus and exit at the right stop, adding an extra layer of security.

     

    Commercial Vehicles and Trucking

    AI-driven surveillance solutions can monitor driver behavior in real time. Ostad explains, “[AI] can tell [fleet managers] if a driver is on their cell phone, if the driver is drowsy, if they drive through a red light, if they follow a vehicle too close.” By identifying and addressing risky behaviors as they happen, AI not only helps prevent accidents but also improves compliance, lowers liability, and promotes a culture of accountability on the road.

    When considering AI-driven mobile video surveillance implementation, Ostad emphasizes the importance of collaboration and thorough assessment. He advises businesses to “partner up with as many people as you can and look at the scenarios and cases... [It’s about] understanding [your needs] and asking your vendor or company to come up with a solution that works for you.” This approach ensures that businesses select a solution tailored to their specific requirements, enabling more effective and efficient deployment of AI technology.
